Folksong: The Skye boat Song

We are learning two folksongs this term during our group studies on Fridays. The first one is The Skye boat song about Charles the Pretender. This particular one is a family favorite.

The song tells how Bonnie Prince Charlie (The Pretender) escaped in a small boat, with the aid of Flora MacDonald, disguised as a serving maid. The song is a traditional expression of Jacobitism and its story has also entered Scotland as a national legend. (1720-1728) More here.  His story is mentioned in This Country of Ours and Churchill's Age of Revolutions.

Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclouds rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the claymore could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead in Culloden's field.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Burned are their homes, exile and death
Scatter the loyal men;
Yet e'er the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

  1. Yes! A family favorite here,too.

    I am so grateful that we are able to answer this call to homeschool; that we found Miss Charlotte and friends; that we are being introduced to these great treasures of song and spirit.

    (The Corries - what a gift! I probably would have never encountered them otherwise. So grateful!)

    And, thank you for posting the extras about the song. Appreciate your sharing!!!
