Our chicken went into labor

...and let out a scream that sent us all running to the rescue.

Lo and Behold!

Aren't they beautiful?
I feel like a proud grandma!

  1. Congratulations! I just love hearing about your farm and how a family manages that type of endeavor. More ideas to tuck away...

  3. Are you going ot let her "set" a nest (for chicks) or are these to supply your family with fresh eggs ? We have done both.

CONGRATS on your newest "additions" !

    God Bless.

  6. She really did scream. We thought a dog was after her. Since then she clucks nicely with pride whenever she lays an egg. They always say the first child is the hardest in childbirth. ;)

    MomtoCherubs,
We won't let them set until later. Now we just want eggs for eating. When they do set, I'll come to your blog for help. We had chickens when I was a teenager, but we never raised chicks from eggs. I don't know anything about it yet.

  7. They are beautiful! How many do you have in your flock? Currently we only have 2 hens but we have plans for more in the spring. My daughter and I love checking books out from the library to look at all the many kinds of breeds and dream about which ones we'd like to have.

  8. It's so funny how they want to be noticed. Baaach, baaach, baaach, I'm laying an egg. Aren't I unique and wonderful? Baaach, baaach, baaach.

If you want to raise chicks from eggs, get a silkie hen. They are the best mamas.

My stepmother was raised on a farm and told me that if they didn't have a broody hen, they made her go broody. They put a clutch of eggs in a box and put the hen in with them. They let her out once a day to stretch and eat, etc. I never did this since I always had a silkie hen. They will even try to brood rocks.

Our sweet silkie mama raised a great little new flock this year. Sadly she died today.
