Year 8 Exams- Term 3
This Monday we started lessons again and so I have been too busy to answer emails or post another installment about cultivating spirituality in our children. I find that our first two weeks of school are always the busiest of the year. I thought I'd post the latest examination questions I gave StrongJoy, my 15 year old since they were already typed up. The booklist she used is from HEO year 8 with just a few alterations.
Just a few notes:
The upper years is a time when we begin to emphasize the practice of reading books more intentionally. In doing so, our children realize that books were written not just for enjoyment but most authors have a message they are attempting to communicate through STORY. Literature becomes even more intriguing as they discover further meaning behind the tale. I'm not speaking of endless analysis, just a gold nugget here and there.
You will notice as you read Miss Mason's writings that older students' examination questions no longer consist mainly upon recalling WHAT was read, but HOW and WHY certain events happened. In other words, 'cause and effect' become the focus. Older children are delighted to find that all those ideas they enjoyed in childhood are actually individual threads coming together to form a beautiful tapestry of Truth. And isn't this the goal of education? Experience has taught us that the faith of the parents is not enough to sustain a child in the years to come, so a careful mother will guide her children on a path that will help them discover that truth. She will not always TELL them the truth, but give them the tools to discover it for themselves SO THAT IT WILL BE THEIR OWN.
Here are some of our Year 8 questions.
Type your answers. Record your music and recitations on the computer.
*Remember, no fluff. Essays should have an intro, supporting info and conclusion. No fluff. Be detailed, but to the point. Don't chat with me. I expect good description. No fluff. Use as many proper nouns and dates as you can remember.

Yummy! Would you share your recipe?
Hi Lindfay,
I love your blog. I have been hooked for about 3 months now. I have a lot to learn still. I have a 13 boy in 8th grade that has been homeschooled all his life. I do use a literature based curriculum for most subjects. I seem to have trouble getting him to give me his best. Most of his work is shotty and quickly done. I was wondering if you have any advice on how to spark my boy to do his best and even exceed his best.
Blessings,
Kim
Hi lindafay,
I was reading through your exam this time and as always, I'm impressed not only with the content but with the simplicity of the exam questions. I try to follow your lead in that respect when I am writing our exams each term.
Question for you: Do you write the exam questions as you go through the term or do you wait until the end? I usually wait but I am beginning to think I should be at least jotting down general ideas as they come to. I'm curious about how you write yours up.
Have a great week back at school...we went year round this year and we are in week 9 already! It is almost time for a break.
Thanks,
Barb-Harmony Art Mom
This is great. I had fun exploring your site! There is a lot of good information here! I'll be back. Thanks!
Barb,
I write them at the end of the term but I do jot down notes during the term reminding myself to ask a question about a particular area of importance during exam time. Hope you had a great summer. I've been out of touch with the blog world this summer. Just to busy with the international move.
Anon,
I'll post the recipe soon.
warmly,
lindafay
Wow! What a great blog. Just found you on the momblogs.
Your exam questions are a great help for a newbie. I noticed that you posted your year 8, term 1 and your year 8, term 3 exam. Any luck you'd be posting your term 2 exam for year 8?
Thanks so much,
Michele in NJ
Michele,
We have exams twice a year, so we skipped term 2 for year 8.
