Getting Started with the Charlotte Mason Method

I have written extensively about the Charlotte Mason method on this blog and realize that it may be difficult to find the basic 'How to...' articles among all my posts. So if you take a look on my sidebar, you will find a new area called 'Starting Points.' There, you should find some practical help for narration, dictation, handwriting, memorization etc...

one step at a time...

  2. Thank you. That is very helpful.

I do have a question about grammar. You mention in the dictation post that, as well as spelling, grammar is learned by this method. But I also notice that Daily Grams and books by Ruth Heller are a part of your curriculum starting in year 2. Do you recommend using a program like Daily Grams or just keep with the natural way of learning grammar through dictation (or other methods)?

  4. Thanks! That will be helpful to me in the coming months and years. Your blog in a blessing to me and I thank you for it. I don't comment often but I do read it. Many blessings on you and your family as you move into fall.
I made a Turkish recipe the other day- mucver, little fried zucchini patties. I don't know how authentic it was, but we all enjoyed it very much, and I thought of you.

  5. Once again, thank you Lindafay for such a fantastic resource! For three years I have been trying to get copywork started in our homeschool and each time I have failed at keeping it going. I recently reread your posts on copywork and I love your idea of a copywork source jar. My problem: I don't have a bunch of quotes at my fingertips and I can't ever keep up with finding new material on a regular basis. I wondered if you have a file of copywork material that you could share? I would be so grateful to have anything to seed my venture with. As always, very inspired by your blog,
    Katherine

  8. Hi there Mrs. Lindafay! :) It has been a while since I've been here. I hope you are all doing all right. I heard you got some goats! How exciting. I will have to check the girls' blog to see if they've posted anything about them.

You know, I was going to write a bio about Ms. Mason for http://www.growingingraceonline.com/. Perhaps reading through your starting points may help me understand her method better, though I think I have an idea.

  9. I started reading your blog about 18 months ago when we began homeschooling. I continue to use your blog as a homeschooling resource; its more than a "blog." :)

  10. Joy,
Personally, I teach grammar naturally here and there in the early years. I used to use Daily Grams years ago to hold my hand and recommend mothers who are unsure of grammar instruction to begin with them for a year or two, but they are certainly not necessary.

    Katherine,
I don't have a particular source. I just collect quotes as I find them on the internet and on calendars, etc... We cut them up and use them later. Bartleby is a good source. Just look up 'famous quotations' on the web and see what you find.

    Jocelyn,
Yes, we have 16 goats now as well as cattle and many chickens, dogs and cats. The girls have spent a lot of time lately with them. We have several sick ones. How many goats do you all have? Any pointers/tips for me?

    You are all very welcome.

    warmly,
    lindafay
