Valentine's Day

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixèd mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his heighth be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom:
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

William Shakespeare

  2. I'm memorizing that sonnet this year! And since I am also reading a book about the struggles to measure the distance to the stars in the early seventeenth century, I finally understand line eight~no matter what science can tell us about how far it is to the stars, or how much they weigh, or what they're made of, it cannot tell us the true worth of anything, least of all love. Connections!

  3. This is the first love poem my husband to be gave me while we were in college together...and he quoted the whole thing! I was awestruck. We still quote these lines to each other to remind us of True Love's behavior.
