Year 6 Exams- Term 1

These are the examinations I made for my 12 year old. We took the entire week to do them and she just followed her regular scheduled time for subjects, but instead of doing her usual schoolwork, she answered these questions. My children look forward to exam week as a break from normal studies and a time to display what they have learned. The final answers are evaluated by mom, attached to their little CM style progress report and shown to Dad. He has individual conferences with each child. We do this twice a year.

Choose two questions per day that you will write (or draw) about. The rest you may give oral narrations into the tape player. Refer to your daily schedule to know which books to narrate from each day this week. Pay attention to when you should summarize and when you should tell with detail what you know about a person or event. Turn in your answers each day with your exam questions. Be neat and watch your capitalization, punctuation and spelling. Have fun!

If that was testing when I was a kid I wouldn't have hated them so much. I am not saying what your kids are doing is easy ,by no means. But that evaluation definatly would show you how much really took root. I am so glad you found me :0) . There is so much I need to change and bring up a level in my CM teaching methods. Lately I have felt like I have been flailing in my homeschool. The sad thing is we still will probably be going on with school till end of July, Mamma's getting tierd.
    Have a blessed day.

Your daughter will have this to hang on to for the rest of her life if she wants. This learning is so real for her. What do you have from sixth grade that you hang onto?! Did you make up this final for her?

June 4, 2006 - I always learn so much when I visit you!

I'll have to keep this in mind. Everytime I visit you I find something else I want to incorporate into our homeschooling adventure. I know you've probably said this before, but where are you getting all this information from? I don't remember seeing it in A Charlotte Mason Education...

Oh, and your right sidebar has a layering problem with your quotes and links, from a Mozilla Firefox user's standpoint.

    Inspired,

June 5, 2006 - in answer to your questions...

Yes, I made the questions up myself, but I referred to Charlotte Mason's original examination questions that she used in order to get ideas as to how to frame the questions and to get a grasp on how much to expect from an 11 or 12 year old child. You can find those questions at the AO website.

The questions should be worded in such a way that the child must give a storytelling/narration response rather than single word or sentence answers. Also, I am trying to find out how well they can remember something they narrated previously to me in the year. I am not tryng to catch them in an error but rather giving them an opportunity to state what they have learned. This is why I sometimes give them two questions that they may choose from.

The reason I give exams is to find out the children's strengths and weaknesses, and ESPECIALLY to help them cement some ideas and events that they read about several weeks earlier. I also am able to help point out any problems in their essay writing. I find that examinations have been an excellent teaching tool. I don't ever plan to show them to anyone. That is not my purpose.

    Jessica,

My website looks fine to me in Mozilla Firefox. When it is first loading the quotes are skewed, but when it is completley finished loading everything looks fine. Do you have an older version? I have the latest one. Is anyone else having the same troubles?

  2. Lindafay, sometimes I wonder why I'm spending time reading blogs instead of just good books, but then I read a post like this one :) I can't tell you what a blessing this has been to me! I've been reading here and there about different approaches to CM exams, and pretty much getting confused because everyone's method seemed so different from Miss Mason's exams. Then, this afternoon, I read this post and a huge wave of relief came :) You really test the way Miss Mason did! What a blessing to read of someone closely following her exam methods!!! I can't tell you how encouraging this is to me.

I also want to encourage you (hopefully) in your decision to share only the exam questions/prompts and not the responses. It's so tempting to post narrations, isn't it? But, I admire your decision to not set up that "comparison fuel". Thank you so much!!!

    Blessings,
    Jacci

P.S. I was wondering if you did any review beforehand. From what I have read, Miss Mason discouraged review before exams. Is this accurate? Also, did you begin exams in Year One like Miss Mason's schools???

  3. After browsing around a bit more, I realized that you did post a few answers. I understand that this was at request and that it was not to foster negative comparisons. Moms just really wanted to know what to realistically expect. That's good of you to help them. I still respect you for not bowling everyone over with a "look how well my children narrate" type post. You seem to have a really sweet attitude :)
